Why take a practice test?

Taking a test is not just a way to measure learning; it causes learning. In Roediger and Karpicke’s 2006 study, students who took practice tests on a passage remembered much more of it a week later than students who spent the same time re-reading it. That is the “testing effect”, and it is the same mechanism behind active recall.

How to use a generated test

  • Take it closed-book, under a time limit similar to the real exam.
  • Mark it with the key, then turn every missed question into a card you study first. The study mode puts missed cards back in box 1 for you.
  • Generate a fresh version a few days later. The questions, options and order change each time.

Written questions are the hardest and most useful, because there are no options to recognise. Start with multiple choice if the material is new, then shift the mix toward written as the exam gets closer.

Want cards rather than a test? The printable flashcard maker lays a deck out double-sided or fold-over. Running it as a class activity? Try the practice test relay in our classroom review games.

Questions people ask

How does the practice test generator make questions?

It uses your flashcards. Multiple choice pairs each card with three wrong answers from the same deck; true/false pairs a term with either its own definition or another card’s; matching mixes up to 10 pairs; written questions show one side and ask for the other.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. Printing puts the key on its own page at the end. On screen, “Check my answers” marks the auto-graded questions.

Can teachers print tests for a class?

Yes. Generate, print, then generate again for a second version with different question order and options.

Will it use AI?

No. Tests are built directly from your cards in the browser, so every answer comes from your own material.
