Free AI flashcard generator: notes, PDFs and photos to flashcards
Paste your class notes, upload a PDF, Word file or slides, or snap a photo of handwritten notes. The AI drafts flashcards from that material only, and you edit them before saving. No signup.

Scanned page, photo or handwriting? Read with AI
Add up to 6 images: phone photos of notes or a whiteboard, screenshots, or pages of a scanned PDF. You can also paste a screenshot here (Ctrl/⌘ + V). The AI types out the text, then you check it and make cards.
PDF, Word and PowerPoint files are read in your browser; only the extracted text is sent. With “Read with AI”, the images themselves (resized in your browser first) are sent to the AI model through Vercel AI Gateway to read the text, and are not stored by StudyBlitz. Your notes are sent to the AI model through Vercel AI Gateway to write the cards, and are not stored by StudyBlitz. Don’t paste anything private.
Draft cards
Cards appear here as they are written. If the AI isn’t available, you can still make cards by hand or paste a list.
How to get good cards from AI
- Paste focused material. One lesson or chapter section at a time gives tighter cards than a whole unit.
- Pick the style for the subject. Term → definition suits vocabulary and biology; question → answer suits history and concepts; fill-in-the-blank suits formulas, dates and quotes.
- Always check the draft. The generator is told to use only your notes, but models can still misread. Delete or fix anything that looks off before you save.
- Edit a few in your own words. Rewording is itself a round of active recall, and it makes the card yours.
AI flashcard maker vs making cards yourself
Writing cards by hand makes you process the material, which helps memory. AI saves the typing when you have a lot to cover, like a 20-page reading before a test. A good middle path: let the AI draft, then cut it down to the cards that matter and rewrite any you couldn’t explain to a friend. If you already have a term list, the flashcard maker’s paste mode is faster than AI.
Questions people ask
Is the AI flashcard generator free?
Yes, with a fair-use limit of a few generations per minute so the service stays free for everyone.
Can I turn a PDF into flashcards?
Yes. Upload the PDF, pick a page range, and its text is pulled out in your browser and placed in the notes box. Each run handles up to 8,000 characters (about three dense pages), so do long chapters a few pages at a time. Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so use “Read with AI” to have the pages read as images instead.
Can I make flashcards from a photo of my notes?
Yes. Under “Read with AI”, add up to six photos, screenshots or scanned pages, including handwritten notes. The AI types out the text into the notes box, you fix anything it misread, then generate cards. Clear, well-lit photos taken straight on read best.
Can I turn Word documents or PowerPoint slides into flashcards?
Yes. Upload a .docx or .pptx file and its text (and slide speaker notes) is pulled out in your browser and placed in the notes box, ready to generate cards. Older .doc and .ppt files need to be saved as .docx or .pptx first.
Can ChatGPT create flash cards?
It can write card text, but you then have to copy it into a flashcard tool. This generator does both in one step: the cards land in an editable list you can save and study straight away.
Which AI model does it use?
A current OpenAI text model served through Vercel AI Gateway. It is instructed to use only the notes you paste and not to add outside facts.
Are my notes stored?
StudyBlitz does not store them. They are sent once to generate the cards. The cards you save live only in your browser.
Does it work in other languages?
Yes. The cards come back in the language of your notes.
